The Importance of Goal Setting

Goal Setting is vital to have a clear focus on what it is that you desire. Without a goal we are less likely to accomplish things in life. Our goals will help guide us to build a plan and execute it, creating a clear and strong direction towards our greatest desires. 

How to Set Meaningful Goals

I have always found that by using the SMART goal setting techniques we are able to fine tune a goal. A New Years Resolution becomes more meaningful if we can turn it into a SMART goal. 

What is a SMART Goal?

A SMART goal has 5 attributes. It’s a goal that is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. 


The goal should be specific. What exactly do you want to achieve? The more specific you are, the more clarity you will have in determining the required effort to achieve this. 


Having a measurable goal will help you refine your actions. By using evidence to measure progress we can determine if we are on track to achieve the goal.


Is your goal achievable? If you don’t have the time, money or talent to reach a certain goal you’ll certainly fail and be miserable. That doesn’t mean that you can’t take something that seems impossible and make it happen by planning smartly and going for it!


A realistic goal would be something that is achievable. Goals must also be set by the individual for the individual. They should be realistic but challenging. We cannot achieve what is impossible. 


The fifth and last step—timely—means that your goals should have a beginning and an end. This step is especially important because it supports all the others. A goal with no start and end is not specific or measurable, and there’s a good chance it won’t be attainable. 

Set and then Re-set your Goals.

At Shape we work with our clients every 12 weeks to set SMART goals for their health and fitness. Every 12 weeks we review and reassess these goals and then set new goals for the next 12 weeks and beyond.
