I’ve just completed the Central West Cycle Trail 6-Day Self-Guided Tour, and what an incredible journey it was! Covering a 400km loop through some of the most stunning rural landscapes in NSW, the experience was nothing short of unforgettable.
From Dubbo to Wellington, Gulgong, Dunedoo, Mendooran, Ballimore and back to Dubbo, every day brought a mix of sweeping countryside views, quiet gravel backroads, historic townships, and warm country hospitality.
Highlights of the Journey
Day 1 (Dubbo → Wellington, 64km): Riding past the Macquarie River and over Mt Arthur Reserve into Wellington. The lookout views were worth every pedal stroke.
Day 2 (Wellington → Gulgong, 76km): Passing through Montefiores and the Wellington Solar Farm before climbing the Twelve Mile Road. The history-rich goldmining town of Gulgong was the perfect overnight stop.
Day 3 (Gulgong → Dunedoo, 58km): Quiet country lanes, birdsong, and a stop at Mayfield for a true country morning tea before rolling into Dunedoo – home of the famous Winx mural. We had a slight diversion due to heavy rain, but we were in good hands with Mick, as he collected our group of 4 and our cycles and drove us to our Morning tea at Sue’s place.
Day 4 (Dunedoo → Mendooran, 63km): Gravel roads, rolling hills, and a warm welcome at Sue’s country home for morning tea.
Day 5 (Mendooran → Ballimore, 61km): Cycling through the beautiful Goonoo Forest, spotting kangaroos, emus, and cockatoos – an Aussie wildlife showcase on two wheels.
Day 6 (Ballimore → Dubbo, 55km): A final morning tea stop at Wongarbon with Susie’s famous scones before rolling back into Dubbo, tired but smiling.
What Made It Special
The route is designed to keep you off main highways and on scenic, safe backroads.
Every town offered a slice of authentic country life – pubs, cafes, galleries, and friendly locals.
The support was seamless – luggage transfers, morning teas, and accommodation all organised, leaving nothing to worry about except turning the pedals.
This wasn’t just a bike ride – it was a chance to disconnect, breathe in fresh country air, and explore towns I’d never otherwise visit. For anyone who enjoys cycling, nature, and the thrill of adventure, this tour is a must-do.
