Shape DynaMo testing
Strength and range of motion you can measure
VALD DynaMo is how Shape coaches quantify muscle strength and joint mobility in 1 on 1 personal training — so your program is built on numbers, not guesswork.
Strength How much force a muscle can produce
ROM How far a joint can actually move
L vs R Left and right compared, not assumed equal

The tool
A handheld measure of how you move
DynaMo is a handheld dynamometer and inclinometer. In plain terms: it measures force (strength) and joint angle (range of motion) in the same session, on the gym floor.
Instead of “that feels a bit tight” or “this side seems weaker”, your coach gets a number. That number becomes a baseline — then a way to see whether the program is working.
Built for everyday training, not a lab
What we measure
Strength and ROM, side by side
Most people train around what they can already do. DynaMo shows where you are strong, where you are restricted, and whether one side is doing more work than the other.
Strength testing
A dynamometer records the force a muscle can produce — grip, push, or pull — so we can set loads that match you, not a generic chart. Peak force, left-to-right differences, and retests over the weeks tell us if you are actually getting stronger.

Range of motion
An inclinometer measures joint angle — how far a shoulder, hip, spine, or ankle actually moves. If a squat, overhead press, or daily movement feels stuck, we can see whether it is strength, mobility, or both, then program accordingly.

How DynaMo shows up in personal training
Testing is not a separate appointment. It sits inside 1 on 1 coaching — short, useful, and tied to the work you are already doing.
-
01
Baseline
Early in your program we measure key strength and mobility numbers so we know where you are starting — including left and right.
-
02
Program
Your coach uses those numbers to choose loads, mobility work, and which side needs more attention. The plan matches your body, not a template.
-
03
Retest
We measure again so you can see progress in kilograms and degrees, not only in how a session felt. That keeps the program honest.
Why it matters
Numbers you can train from
You do not need to be returning from injury, or chasing a race. If you train at Shape, clearer data means a clearer plan.
-
Less guesswork
“It feels weaker on that side” becomes a measurement. Your coach can progress you with more confidence — and pull back when the numbers say you should.
-
A program that fits
Tight hips, a stiff shoulder, or a grip that fades in class all show up in testing. We build the session around what your joints and muscles can actually do today.
-
Progress you can see
The scale and the mirror only tell part of the story. Stronger grip, more shoulder range, a smaller left-right gap — those are results you can track between Evolt scans.
-
Training that lasts
Measuring mobility and strength helps us keep you training well through busy weeks, niggles, and the decades ahead — not just the next 12 weeks.
Alongside Evolt
Body composition plus how you move
Evolt scans show what your body is made of. DynaMo shows what it can do. Together they give your coach a fuller picture than either one alone.
Evolt
Muscle, fat, and how composition changes as you train and eat.
DynaMo
Force and joint range — the strength and mobility behind the scan.
Your coach
Turns both into a program you can stick to, session by session.
How to start
Testing lives inside personal training
DynaMo is part of 1 on 1 coaching at Shape — not a standalone product and not a gym-only extra. New to the studio? Start with a tour.
-
Personal training
30-minute 1 on 1 sessions, from $85 a week. Strength and ROM testing sits in your program alongside Evolt scans, nutrition, and the Shape app.

Common questions
New to Shape? Start with a free discovery tour or call 1300 803 889.
-
Do I need to be injured or very fit?
No. DynaMo is for the same people who train with us — getting started, getting stronger, coming back from a niggle, or staying capable as life gets busier. Testing is scaled to you.
-
Is it an extra cost?
No. Strength and ROM testing is used as part of 1 on 1 personal training, in the same way Evolt scans sit inside your membership.
-
How long does a test take?
Minutes, not a whole session. Your coach picks the tests that matter for your goals — a grip, a shoulder, a hip — then you get back to training.
-
Does gym-only membership include it?
DynaMo is a coaching tool, so it sits with personal training. Gym Only is floor access on your own. If you want testing and a program built from it, start with PT or a discovery tour.
